Reasons To Buy An Umbrella Policy

Few people want to spend one dime more on car insurance than they have to, but when it comes to protecting personal assets, making sure the proper coverage is in place is vital. People who own homes or other property have assets they need to protect, and there are ways to do so by combining coverage for maximum protection.

It's a sad but true fact that in many locations other assets can come into jeopardy after an auto accident. This is especially so for the driver at fault and even more so if he or she has assets other people might want to claim. While a good auto insurance policy, with reasonable limits, will cover most cases, sometimes this policy isn't enough.

Here's where an umbrella policy can come into play and help a homeowner protect their property and other assets from being turned into liability payments.

So, what is an umbrella policy and how does it work?

An umbrella policy simply is an extra policy that provides additional liability coverage above and beyond a regular policy's upper limits. If a lawsuit is brought against you as a driver that demands more of a payment than the auto insurance policy affords, the umbrella comes into play. This umbrella generally works in coordination with a homeowner's policy to help ensure assets - such as your personal home - cannot be taken to pay a large claim.

In the case of a car crash, for example, the auto policy would pay up to its limit and then the umbrella would pay up to its individual limit, if it's necessary. The same situation works for umbrella policies that go along with homeowner's coverage.

Getting an umbrella policy isn't necessary for everyone, but those with assets they want to protect should look into one. The policies are not available to all people. Homes that have teen drivers, for example, might not qualify and people with bad driving records, too, might be turned down. But, for those who do qualify, the coverage can be worth every penny in the case of a bad crash.

Many companies offer umbrella policies and they generally are fairly affordable for good drivers. They typically run about $300 a year and can really be very important in times of crisis. Shop around for this type of coverage just like you would any other type. Ask questions, compare prices and look into different company's track records of handling claims before making a decision to buy.
