Shopping Around For Car Insurance Is Smart

Okay, it's the law. We all know it. Going without car insurance while driving can result in some big fines and even bigger worries if a crash takes place. But, does that mean everyone needs to spend a fortune to get good coverage? Absolutely not!

The smart consumer shops around for insurance and makes sure they're buying what they truly need before they sign on the dotted line. With the competition for auto insurance writing fierce, the range of expense for similar policies can be remarkably large. Not all companies are the same, so shoppers who really want the best deals do some serious comparison shopping.

Before calling insurance companies to get quotes, figure out exactly what you need or want in coverage. It's wise to compare apples to apples when shopping, which means the same types of coverage.

In general, most car insurance shoppers will need:

* Personal injury protection. This covers the driver if there are injuries after a crash. It's not always needed for those who have decent medical coverage, but it's the law in most states any way. The deductibles and limits of this coverage should adjust based on personal situation.
* Liability. This covers damage a driver might cause to property or a person in an automobile crash. The limits here, along with deductibles, are adjustable.
* Comprehensive. This covers damage by an unknown party or "act of God." That tree falling on a car in 100 different commercials would be one such case. This type of coverage is generally optional.
* Collision. This covers damage to your vehicle and can help pay off loans and restore a car to working condition after a crash. This is generally optional coverage.
* Other adds ons. These can include uninsured motorist coverage, rental car fees, towing and so on.

Determine what it is you want in coverage and then start making for calls. Check into different kinds of insurance companies - the big names and otherwise - but pay attention to previous customer comments. You'll want to find an insurance company with a good record for handling claims after accidents. There's nothing worse than being injured and without transportation and finding out you need to wait 10 weeks for the insurance company to consider the claim.

As you talk to different companies, jot down notes about pricing, payment histories and so on. Then compare to choose the best company for you. It's possible you'll find a big-name company offers everything you need, but you also may find a smaller company is just the ticket. You won't know unless you shop and compare.
