Wet Weather Driving Skills Can Keep Insurance Costs Down
Ask anyone from a state where rain isn't an everyday or even every month occurrence and you'll find they will say driving on wet roads can be almost as dangerous - if not more so - than driving in snow and ice. With this in mind, it should be very easy to see why having good wet weather driving skills can help avoid not only accidents but higher insurance rates.
In places where it doesn't rain for a while, oil and other auto sediment can build up on roads. When the skies do open up, this residue turns into a slippery, nasty mess. Knowing how to safely handle these conditions can protect you and your passengers and also your wallet. Crashes, even if the conditions make driving "impossible," can make your insurance rates go up.
When driving in rain, remember these things, to protect yourself from a crash and increased rates:
* Drive slowly and safely. The speed limit need not apply when the sky is falling. This is especially so when visibility is hampered.
* Keep your lights on. If you're having trouble seeing in a downpour, chances are other drivers are, too. Be smart and just let those lights sign to show you - and other drivers - the way.
* Make sure windshield wipers are changed regularly. There's nothing worse than finding out this needs to be done when you need the wipers the most!
* Know how to handle skids. When a car begins to skid in the rain, ease off the gas and steer the car in the direction you need it to go. Don't panic!
* If your car has ABS, know how to work the system safely and effectively.
* Avoid hydroplaning. This means keeping speeds at a safe level. But, if hydroplaning happens, remain calm and let the speed subside. Remember your tires aren't on the road, so steering might not be effective. To avoid it entirely, slow down, drive in other cars' tread paths and make sure to maintain good traction on your tires. Stop a hydroplane by slowing down - not breaking - and don't try to turn quickly.
The best offense in wet weather conditions is a good defense. Remember it's better to arrive a little late than not at all. Keep the conditions in mind and adjust driving habits to suit. If you can handle wet weather conditions with ease, it's likely you might even see a break in insurance down the road as your good habits can help you avoid a costly crash mistake.
